What Is Bandwidth?

Bandwidth is the term used to describe the size of an Internet connection. The greater the bandwidth, the more information the connection can carry per second.

What Is Broadband?

A broadband Internet connection is one that will carry more than 56 kbps of information. Dial-up is not broadband. ISDN, DSL, Cable and T1 service are all broadband connections.

Options For Increasing Bandwidth:

  • Make better use of existing bandwidth
  • Buy a connection with more bandwidth
  • DSL or Cable are the most cost effective

Variables Affecting Internet Speed:

  • Speed of your computer and network interface
  • The amount of traffic at your ISP (Internet Service Provider)
  • The amount of traffic on the Internet
  • Type of Internet connection you have
  • The provisioning practices at your ISP
  • Number of users using your connection
  • The number of routers between you and the Web server you are requesting pages from
  • The distance from you to to the Web server
  • The speed of the server providing the pages
